They learn Knowbot was stealing information about "line-eaters", secret monitoring programs that record all information traded through computer and phone lines. Cap expresses his distaste for the current state of martial law. And delivers his optimistic view for the good the internet can do. DD offers a more pessimistic view. Karen Page watches the computer disk from her old producers about their new virtual sex service. They want her "talent". Angrily, she hits the computer. Suddenly, she sees grainy footage on the monitor of a teenage girl apparently being raped. She's sure she saw it, but she can't find it again. Checking in with the supporting cast, Matt refuses Elektra's come-ons. He says he's trying to break form his past, and she should do the same. This only strengthens Elektra's determination. John Garrett is made a reserve S.H.I.E.L.D. agent by Nick Fury. He's closely watched by Siege, another cyborg. Foggy Nelson is offered a job by TV station WFET, owned by Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk. The Red Guardian asks the Crimson Dynamo to accompany him to his workshop. Red Guardian strongly suggests to Crimson Dynamo that she stop questioning his order so much, before they begin to upgrade her armor. The new Darkstar asks Ursa Major if he thinks she is doing an okay job. Ursa Major takes Reena to the “shrine” he has for the original Darkstar and after a brief discussion about Laynia, Ursa Major gives Reena some encouraging words. They discuss the roster, while Vazhin threatens Bukharin, before giving the Winter Guard their next mission, in St Petersburg. The team arrives to find a massive tear in space-time. The Crimson Dynamo attempts to repair the tear - when a woman falls through the tear. The new Darkstar rescues her, and Ursa Major recognizes her as Fantasma! After the tear is sealed, Fantasma is brought back to the Citadel, where Bukharin is shocked to see his former teammate. He reveals that the death of the original Darkstar created a rift in the Winter Guard, resulting in several members leaving the team. Comic Summary: In St Petersburg, Vanguard, Starlight and Powersurge - calling themselves the Protectorate - battle the militant group called Sword of Judgment. They take down the militant group with ease. At the Citadel, the new Darkstar and new Crimson Dynamo discuss the mysterious arrival of Fantasma, both bothered by her mysterious premonition and her slutty costume. The new Darkstar also reveals that she used to be fat and ugly, until she became Darkstar, having the technology at the Citadel change her. She worries that the life of Darkstar is not for her, before Crimson Dynamo detects another tear in reality. In the sick bay, Ursa Major and Dimitri Bukharin are trying to refresh Fantasma’s memories, reminding her of the Winter Guard’s past. The other members of the team soon arrive, and the Red Guardian turns on a monitor, showing the Protectorate in St Petersburg. Ursa Major is shocked to see his former teammates, before the team leaves to confront them. Back in St Petersburg, the Protectorate hope they can locate Fantasma, before the Winter Guard arrives. Vanguard tells them that they need the help of real heroes, not impostors, and the two teams battle, with Vanguard clearly bitter about his sister being replaced. At the Citadel, Dimitri takes Fantasma for a tour, where they encounter the Presence, locked in his holding cell. Fantasma then runs off, exclaiming that she must save them all. Dimitri realizes the Presence did something to Fantasma, and follows her, locating her in the sub-basement - where she is standing amongst a large nest of Dire Wraith eggs. Fantasma reveals that she was always confused about her history, but now knows her purpose, to release the Dire Wraith‘s out into the world once more. She touches the eggs, transforming herself into a Wraith - only to discover the eggs are not fertilized. She stalks Dimitri, wanting to use him, but he manages to escape, so Fantasma finds the Presence instead. Back in St Petersburg, Vanguard tells Reena that she is a mockery of everything his sister stood for, but he stands down when Starlight and Powersurge are overpowered, and he learns that the Winter Guard has Fantasma. The two teams journey back to the Citadel together, during which it is revealed that after the original Darkstar died, Vanguard, Starlight, Powersurge, Steel Guardian, Fantasma, Perun and Vostok left the Winter Guard and formed the Protectorate, journeying to Immortus’ Limbo, where Vanguard pleaded with the Immortus to manipulate time to get Darkstar back. Immortus agreed, providing the Protectorate serve as his personal guard, to defeat the Dire Wraiths which had taken over his realm. During that time Vanguard and Starlight became lovers, while the Steel Guardian was slain in battle, then they learned Fantasma herself was a Dire Wraith, who found a tear in reality and escaped back to Earth, with Vanguard, Starlight and Powersurge following her. The two teams soon arrive at the Citadel, only to find it hovering in the air, and Fantasma’s death-wings surrounding it! (Brief description courtesy of uncannyxmen.net)

Comic Summary: The Winter Guard - Ursa Major, Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo and the new Darkstar, along with the Protectorate - Vanguard, Starlight and Powersurge - have arrived back at the Citadel, only to find it swarming with Fantasma’s death-wings. Taking Vanguard’s hammer, Ursa Major leaps from the jet, and reigns in one of the death-wings, using it to fight the others, enabling the new Darkstar to teleport everyone into the Citadel. Inside, the transformed Fantasma and the Presence are holding each other when they detect the arrival of the Winter Guard, while the Presence reveals his feelings for his forgotten son, estranged lover and the black-hearted thing masquerading as his daughter. Fantasma then releases the Dire Wraiths. The Winter Guard and Protectorate are soon reunited with Dimitri Bukharin, who has donned his old Crimson Dynamo armor. They gather in the Red Guardian’s lab and make plans to defeat the Wraiths by sending them through a tear in reality like they did to Krang and his army. Red Guardian and Starlight make some changes to Powersurge’s armor, while the others reinforce the lab, despite the new Crimson Dynamo offering to help Red Guardian. However, some Dire Wraiths enter the lab through vents in the ceiling - and rip the Red Guardian’s head from his cyborg body. Vanguard takes a Red Guardian shield and uses it as his new weapon, before also commandeering Red Guardian’s motor cycle, before the new Darkstar teleports everyone to the reactor room. They make it to the reactor room, but find themselves having to face-off against countless Dire Wraiths - though they do so valiantly, while the Presence boasts that when the egg-spores are released, they will re-write the Earth. Vanguard confronts his diabolical father, running him over with the motor cycle, before on of the Wraiths kills the new Darkstar by shoving its tongue through her head. The Wraith takes the gem Darkstar had and shifts its form to resemble Darkstar, while Vanguard uses the shield as the conduct for his kinetic energy, preparing to attack his father again, before Fantasma attacks him. Starlight comes to Vanguard’s rescue, while the Wraith quasi-transformed into Darkstar attacks Powersurge, and breaks the device Red Guardian placed on him. Powersurge manages to destroy the Dire Wraith spores, while the new Crimson Dynamo amplifies the effect of Powersurge’s powers, opening another tear in reality, back to Immortus’ Limbo. The new Crimson Dynamo then grabs Fantasma and throws her back into Limbo - but Fantasma’s form shifts, and she reaches out for Starlight - taking her back into Limbo as well, before the tear in reality seals itself. Vanguard attacks his father, blaming him for ruining everything he ever loved, before the reaming Dire Wraiths confront Vanguard, the two Crimson Dynamos and Powersurge. Suddenly though, strange power consumes the Wraith who took the Darkforce diadem from Reena - and Laynia - the real Darkstar - is returned. The Presence is surprised by this development, but nonetheless, attempts to destroy his children and their teammates. Powersurge however absorbs the radiation that the Presence is expelling - to the point that it kills Powersurge, though he saves the day as the Presence is drained of his energies, for now. Darkstar teleports Vanguard and the two Crimson Dynamos to safety, where they are reunited with Ursa Major, just as the Citadel explodes. Ursa Major reveals that he lost Vanguard’s hammer, but Vanguard isn’t bothered. He is just happy that Immortus kept his promise, and Laynia has returned. In the aftermath, the Winter Guard now comprises of the real Darkstar, Ursa Major, Dimitri Bukharin as the Crimson Dynamo and Vanguard as the new Red Guardian. The female Crimson Dynamo meanwhile has secured the remains of the previous Red Guardian’s laboratory, and made it her base. She has the cyborg head of the previous Red Guardian in a tank, and has dubbed herself the Ultra-Dynamo, vowing to take down monsters disguised as heroes. Comic Summary: Deadpool and Gambit are both waiting in line conveniently when they encounter each other, both poised for battle instantly, though they can’t remember why they’re immediately drawn for conflict. This beautifully leads into a flashback sequence which spans the majority of the issue: it focuses on Daredevil and Spider-Man. That sounds strange, and it is, but it works. Deadpool and Gambit decide to masquerade around New York City as the beloved superheroes we mentioned above, wreaking havoc as they seemingly fight. This is where most of the humour and expected quips come from, and whilst it didn’t have us howling, we were chuckling throughout. They both come out of the act with a bunch of diamonds, equally paranoid that one will double-cross the other and run off with the loot – when in fact it’s somebody else who’s double-crossed them and kept the jewels. Annoyed with the fact they’ve lost a bunch of money, they encounter the thief. He proposes to them that if they help him out, they can have their loot back and even more of it…

The team discovers, steals and sets out to find the rest of the Concordance Engines – a set of cosmic, probability warping, reality magnets, built by the “Council of Omegas” (a race of other-dimensional protectors – who here on Earth are known as “Presters”- ie; Prester John), to locate “impossible” occurrences (which result in super-powers instead of death) within other realities and swap those with their 616-Earth counterparts, thus creating…manufacturing… a world populated with an army of “Marvels” which can stand against “Death Celestials” and their quest to destroy everything.
