The vampire leader Xarus has plans for the mutants, which are set in motion when Jubilee is infected by an exploding vampire’s blood. While the X-Men worry what’s happening to her other humans who were near the explosion feel the call later that night and eagerly meet up with their vampire masters. Meanwhile, Cyclops orders Wolverine to assemble a team and do some recon. He, Angel and Pixie set out and after easily defeating a large group of familiars and a vampire upstart discover a vampire safehouse filled with weapons, armor and victims. Cyclops decides it’s time to call the X-Men together to plan their next move in what appears to be an impending war. They take the creature back to Utopia, so that Dr. Nemesis and the X-Club can take a look at what makes this vampire different to the rest. On Utopia, Nemesis is treating Jubilee, who has been infected with a vampire virus. She has a yearning to be elsewhere but cannot describe it very well. When Nemesis goes for a meeting, Dr. Rao looks in on Jubilee but is overpowered. Jubilee flees the island and heads to where Lord Xarus awaits her, more by instinct than anything else. There, she is helpless to fight him and gives herself to him willingly. Cyclops, meanwhile, discovers the scale of the problem facing them. A vampire army is on the move and they are its target. With Emma’s help, he decides that the only way to stop Xarus is by resurrecting his father, Dracula. It may be a Hail Mary play but it might be all they have. Unknown to the Canadian, Cyclops had Dr Nemesis insert something into his bloodstream. Not much later the rest of Cyke’s plan comes to fruition when Namor shows up with Dracula’s decapitated head. With Dracula’s body already in their possession they reattach his head and remove the stake implanted into his heart. The former lord of the vampires returns to undead life and is told by Cyclops they have a situation. They discuss what Xarus has been up to and when questioned about what he’s going to do about it Dracula leaves without any indication of where his head is at. Elsewhere, Jubilee is enjoying her new status as a vampire. Xarus has her with him and his sect leaders in an underground lair. They discuss their plan to turn all mutants into vampires, starting with the X-Men’s most powerful member, Wolverine. Speaking of, Wolverine does what he does best and eventually learns where Jubilee is being held. After dispatching over a dozen vampires he enters the secret hideout and finds Jubilee seemingly captured and helpless. She tricks him into believing she’s ok and then sinks her fangs into his neck. Later, Wolverine is caged up and placed into restraints as he fights the vampiric infection. He eventually busts loose, but only after completing his transformation into a vampire. People all across the city are being attacked and fed upon by the bloodthirsty predators. Cyclops is furious and decides it’s time for the X-Men to hit back. He orders teams of two to head out and help defend the citizens of San Fran. In one particular instance Blade and Angel fight off some vampires at a nightclub. They let one get away who leads them to a staging area with hundreds of vampires waiting around inside a warehouse. When they report back to Cyclops they learn there are more of these staging areas within the city. It’s apparent to Scott the vampires are about to attack so he does the only thing he can think of and calls Xarus. Xarus says he wants the X-Men to join their ranks, but Scott, of course, refuses. After much discussion, and a cameo from Wolverine and Jubilee saying how great being a vampire is Scott threatens Xarus with the decimation of his vampire ranks. Unfortunately, Xarus seems undeterred as he tells Wolverine he wants Cyclops’ head. From suicidal teens to cats stuck in trees, the X-Men are there to save the day. This is good news for Kate Kildare, the X-Men’s publicist, but she has grander plans. She wants the world to know that the X-Men are the good guys. Not much later at Utopia, Scott and Logan discuss Cyclop’s recent ploy of basically tricking Wolverine into becoming a vampire. Logan actually commends Cyclops on the bold move. Their talk is interrupted by an alert from the new computer program Scott has running. He radios Cypher for the info who tells him they have an unusual case in New York City. Scott sends Ororo and a team to investigate. Emma wants to go along in the hopes of a city shopping expedition. So a few hours later Emma, Gambit, Storm and Wolverine arrive in New York City and proceed to enter the sewers searching for something sinister and alligator-ish. Eventually they find the lizard-like creatures who turn out to be numerous and quick. Storm sends them scurrying with a lightning blast and Wolverine goes off in search of one to bring back and question. What he finds instead is Spider-Man who’s down there looking for his old pal the Lizard. They adjourn to a hotel suite and set up a field HQ. Storm sends everyone out to investigate each of the missing children and has Cypher running some analysis as well. None of the kids seem to have anything in common on the surface, but once everyone reports their findings they realize they’re all social outcasts. Then Cypher finds they’ve all spent lots of time on the same website speaking to a user named DB001. Though he can’t get any information on who DB001 is, Cypher notes he’s currently online and hacks into his conversation. DB001 is chatting with a young boy named Max, who is as ostracized a youth as any. DB001 is giving Max directions to a “super cool clubhouse” where kids like him come together and hang out. Storm relays these directions to Wolverine who’s still out in the field in the hopes he’ll get there first. Unfortunately, it’s Max and he is captured by a large lizard named Lars. Wolverine shows up just in time to get his butt handed to him by Lars, and before he can go for round two he’s overwhelmed by a bunch of smaller lizard creatures. Meanwhile, the other captured kids are being held in some sort of makeshift prison. They attempt to pick the lock, but their captor, who isn’t the Lizard, advises them against it. They learn that Max was carted off by a large, talking lizard creature, very different than the ones they’ve battled, and assume it was the Lizard. They begin tracking them and come across a macabre display of deceased, autopsied lizard creatures. Meanwhile, Max is thrown into the same cell with the other teenage captives. As the would-be rescuers get close Dark Beast, the real villain behind it all, has the four original teenagers brought to his lab where he transforms them into lizard creatures. He sends them out to attack the X-Men, and attack they do. While the heroes are busy fighting them off Dark Beast has Max, his prized captive, brought in. Beast is excited to witness Max’s transformation because of the potential he sees in him. Sure enough Max turns out to be one giant lizard. He is sent after the X-Men following the failed attempt by the other four. At first he does well, but then they get organized and he runs away. They follow him to Dark Beast’s lair and enter, all except Spider-Man who gets the ol’ tingly sensation. The door seals shut in front of him. While inside, Emma diamonds up just in time. Dark Beast activates the transformation and while Emma stays herself, her three teammates turn green and scaly. Luckily, it’s Spider-Man to the rescue. Together they escape with the Lizard-Men hot on their tail. After a brief encounter in which the pair flood the transformed X-Men, Emma and Spidey escape and discuss what’s happening. Spidey figures Dark Beast’s machine is emitting a pulse that keeps the lizard people lizards, which is slowly working on them, the initial blast serving as a catalyst for instant transformation. With that realized, they decide to smash the machine. Unfortunately, the lizard creatures track them down again. They attack Spidey who tells Emma to head back to the lair and destroy the machine while he holds them off. She makes it to the lab, but is confronted by Lars and Dark Beast. Instead of facing them herself she releases the Lizard who destroys the machines and takes out Lars, cornering Dark Beast. Spider-Man and the good as new X-Men arrive and keep the Lizard from exacting his revenge. He then decides to return to the sewers and nobody, not even the exhausted Spidey, tries to stop him. Instead, they help Max get back to the surface where the rest of the kids, and Max’s mom, are waiting. In the end, it’s a public relations dream come true, which was exactly what Cyclops was looking for. She’s not in the mood and retreats outside. She’s soon joined by Professor Xavier who has a story to tell her that might help her cope with her vampire predicament. A long time ago Charles was in Kenya on a mystery hunt for whatever was behind a peculiar bull elephant massacre. Along the way he follows a group of mercenaries to another ritual animal slaughter. He’s discovered and about to be killed when an unknown player enters the field and dispatches the mercs. Xavier is curious and enters his mind, discovering that this “young man” is actually a vampire, one who looks out for his kind. He doesn’t get much information before the vampire disappears, but he tells Jubilee that just because she’s a vampire doesn’t mean she has to act like Dracula or Xarus. Her fears allayed for the time being she and Charles head back inside for some cake… and milk.
