The 2001 Topps Marvel Legends set featured one of the premier
sets of Sketch Cards, known as Custom Covers. They were formatted a little
different then what we are used to today. The cards were found randomly
throughout the set like today's cards, but the artists chosen to do the
artwork were limited to who/what they could draw. Each artist was assigned
a set of cover themes based on a Universe within Marvel comics. They were
only to draw characters that they were assigned on the proper cards. Basically,
if they were given X-Men cards, they only got X-Men cards and they were
only allowed to draw characters within the X-Men Universe. They could not
draw Spider-Man on a Fantastic Four card, it would be rejected.

These cards were also released in "levels". Some
easier to find then others. Level 1 being the most difficult to find and
Level 6 being the easiest. X-Men cards were released in Level 3 and Level
5, drawn by 3 different artists. The amount of cards in these levels has
been debated through the course of its release due to misprinting and misinformation.
Needless to say there are not huge amounts of Gambit out there for this
set. With limited artists and very limited card numbers very few were made,
but at least each artist made one or more Gambit cards.
