CHARACTER INFORMATION
-
Daughter of the leader of the New Orleans
Assassins’ Guild, Bella Donna Boudreaux was born while the Guild was involved
in an ages-old conflict with the similarly-structured Thieves’ Guild. Bella
first met Remy LeBeau when they were children. Although she and LeBeau
came from very different backgrounds, they nevertheless became fast friends.
After LeBeau was accepted into the Thieves’ Guild, Bella’s friendship with
him was seen as a chance for an alliance between the Guilds, and the two
were betrothed by their respective parents.
-
HISTORY BREAKDOWN
-
Remy met Bella Donna when they were eight years old. Bel was
out with a group of Assassins enjoying an ice cream and a day out when
the young Remy noticed an attack on the young girl from the rooftops above.
He jumped into the battle to save the girl not knowing who she was. She
quickly showed that she could easily take care of herself using her Assassin's
training to take down the attackers. They introduced themselves and became
fast friends. Their friendship grew, even after Gambit was taken in by
the opposing Thieves Guild. They would team up to steal candy from the
local general store or hang out in the swaps of Louisiana. Over the years
the friendship turned into love, no matter how hard their Fathers attempted
to keep them apart.
-
-
Finally giving up on trying to keep the teenagers apat the
appossing Guilds decided to use the bond as a tool to blend the Guilds.
They arranged a marriage between Remy and Bella Donna when the reached
eighteen years of age. Though Bella Donna was completely in love with Remy
and willing to marry him, there were doubts and infidelities on Remy's
part and anger among Guild members not wanting to unify the Guilds. Julien,
Bel's brother, had the most anger towards the arrangement, mainly due to
his twisted love for his sister. In his anger, Julien challenged Remy to
a duel to the death at the wedding. With no choice, Remy fought Julien.
With an accident due to his out of control mutant abilities Remy mortally
wounded Julien in the fight. The Assassin's Guild deamed it unhonorable
and demanded the death of Remy, but Bella Donna convinced her family to
exile the mutant instead, which angered Remy. Bella Donna begged Remy to
take her with him into exile, but he refused out of anger and left her
behind, disappearing from her life.
-
-
After years of being apart Bella Donna
tracked Remy down to the X-Men mansion. Her surprise visit brought to light
many secrets, unknown to the X-Men or to Gambit himself. The X-Men were
not aware that Remy was married to Bella Donna or the arrangements with
the Guild. Remy was surprised to find that Bella Donna had received new
powers from the Benefactress. Her visit was not just to find her lost husband,
she came to ask for help. The Guilds had been warring and the Brood had
attacked and killed many Guild members, on both sides. The X-Men agreed
to help with the problem and drove to New Orleans. Amidst the battle with
the Brood Queen, Bella Donna followed Psylocke into the mind of the Brood.
The attack successfully won the battle, but mortally wounded Bel. She was
taken home by her fellow Guild members, leaving Remy to believe she had
died in the fight.
-
-
Remy returned later to New Orleans after
his brother's murder on the X-Men Mansion's doorstep. Soon after entering
the city he was attacked by Julien, the brother in law he thought he had
killed before. Finding he was losing the fight with Remy, Julien surprised
him with the information that Bella Donna was still alive. On a quest to
confirm the information, Remy finds that Bel was still alive, but in a
coma and near death. Her Father begs Remy to retrieve the Elixir of Life,
a gift to the Thieves Guild from the Benefactress, to save his daughter.
Remy defied his Father and the Guild to get the elixir only to be attacked
again by Julien, who wanted the elixir for himself. Julien had used the
elixir's power to save himself in the past only to suffer side effects
that turned him into a monster addicted to the elixir's effects. In the
meantime, Rogue is left behind to keep an eye on Bel. While watching Bella
Donna dream, Rogue gets too close and touches her, taking her memories.
Once Bel is given the elixir of life she revives, but lacked any memories
of her past or anyone around her. Remy said he was a friend, but nothing
else and left Bel with her family to recover.
-
-
After she makes a full recovery, Bella
Donna is angered at the lose of her memories. She turns her anger in hatred
into a vendetta against Remy and Rogue, which is incouraged by fellow Assassin's
Guild members and Candra, the former benifactress of the Guilds. At the
funeral of her father, Marius Boudreaux, Bella Donna is propositioned
by Candra. It puts in motion the kidnapping of Rogue's childhood friend,
Cody, knowing that Remy and Rogue would come to the rescue. This would
allow Bella Donna her revenge against the two people she faults for her
condition and Candra her revenge for Remy taking away her position among
the Guilds as benifactress. The plot in the end fails, but leaves the rift
between Bella Donna and Remy.
-
-
Still angry and confused about her feelings
for Gambit, Bella Donna takes out a contract on Remy's life at the same
time New Sun sends every Assassin out after him as well. The million dollar
price on Remy's head brings out the best, but Bella Donna corners him in
a construction zone. The fight outside the building causes it to crumble
in around them, trapping them inside. As they wait for the Guild's to dig
them out Remy asks Bel why she is attempting to kill him. Bella Donna comes
clean and admits she just wanted to get close to him to find out why she
still loved him. They escape the rubble by Remy's re-found powers and leave
to unite the Guild's and seek out the prophesied Resurrection of the Old
Kingdom.
-
-
Gambit took a long absence from the Guild
to do work with the X-Men. When he comes into town, Bella Donna finds Remy
fighting with Bandit, her new boyfriend, over a gun they were both hired
to steal. She takes Remy out for coffee and scolds him about not checking
in with her or his Father (who is magically back in the fold of the Guild),
but to also make him aware that she received a copy of his sex tape. Within
his current work Remy finds out that Bandit is not really the person Bella
Donna believes him to be. He attempts to confront Bel about it, but she
thinks he is being jealous and is attempting to sabotage her happiness.
Gambit leaves paperwork behind that proves Bandit is using her. Bel reads
the file and realizes Remy is right and they both take down Bandit together.
-
-
For unexplained reason, the Assassin's
Guild is sent out after Gambit later by Bella Donna. Maybe because he was
sabotaging their attempt to fill a contract on Professor X's life. No one
really knows for sure.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSES
-
Bella Donna and Remy also have history
within the Mutant X universe. In this version of the Marvelverse they are
both still members of the Guild of New Orleans and are married to unify
the guild, but there was no exile and they are happily married. They both
raise the child, Raven, as their own, even though she was not biologically
theirs. Raven was the biological, genetically created, daughter of Havok
and Jean Grey. Remy saved her when Sinister threatened to kill her. Bella
Donna was killed in a battle with SHEILD when they were sent to steal Raven
from Gambit and the Guild. Remy left the Guild and joined up with The Six
after Bella Donna's death.
-
-
Bella Donna and Remy also had a different
history within the X-Men Animated series on FOX. She made her first appearance
in Season 1, Episode 13 as a memory from Gambit's mind. She made her first
real appearance in Season 1, Episode 6 'X-ternally Yours'. She kidnaps
Remy in an attempt to get him to marry her in exchange for his Brother's
life.
